As for managers with the recent Sporting Lisbon elections going on (which i've been impressed with the way the admin works in Portugal vs here, i.e a President is elected and not by merit of owning the team)

I would image thats because Sporting are an association, much like Barcelona or Real Madrid whereby members elect presidents, as opposed to a company which we are, in effect.

Sadly you are right and Italy has really got this wrong for years.  A president should not be the person who is dumping the bulk of the money into the franchise...Judgement becomes clouded and you wind up with power struggle's at the top alla almost every owner/president in Serie A.

Completely different ownership structure for those clubs - the fans are effectively the shareowners.

Indeed, but you only have to look at the Argentine league to see the level of madness a structure of this kind can induce. Ultra Fans in that struture dominate the clubs and have been described as little Mafia's, using the clubs resources to their benefit.

As football increasingly becomes a business, it matters more and more to have a sound corporate structure (whatever it may be). It's killing the soul of the sport, but the alternative is being a small time club with limited resources.
