 With the business end of the season fast approaching and 15 games remaining in Serie A it's time to take a look into the possibility of turning our dream of the Champions League into a reality. Lazialita brought up the fact that the dream team comprised of Delio Rossi's men in 2006-2007 finished the season in 3rd with 62points albeit by way of minus 3 from the infamous calciopoli scandal. (So in essence 65 points) 65 Points we'll say was the magic number for a 4th spot since AC Milan finished 4th by way of 61 (70 in total by way of the -9 penalty points imposed on the Diavoli ) The following season Prandelli's Fiorentina took home 4th by totaling 66 points on the back of Mutu's 17 goal season. Below are the end of season classifica from the last 4 seasons. Final 2009-2010 1.Internazionale - 82 pts 2.Roma- 80 3. Milan- 70 4. Sampdoria- 67 Final 2008-2009 1. Internazionale (C)- 84pts 2. Juventus- 74 3. Milan- 74 4. Fiorentina- 68 Final 2007-2008 1. Internazionale (C)- 85pts 2. Roma - 82 3. Juventus - 72 4. Fiorentina - 66 Final 2006-2007 1. Internazionale (C)- 97 pts 2. Roma - 75 3. Lazio- 62* (-3) 4. Milan - 61 * (-9) Based on my calculations over the last 4 years an average of 66.5 points needs to be attained in order to reach the prestigious, lucrative, elite tournament known as the Champions League. For argument sake lets say 67 points is the magic number. In a season as competitive as this one chances are it will be less. As the dream continues lets count down the points needed in this thread. FACCI SOGNARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

15 Games left, 26 points left to the magic number of 67! An average of 1.7 points per game is necessary, let's say 9 wins to go! DAJE RAGAZZI!

The next four games are pivotal. If we can't win against these four, we have no business in the CL imo.

9 wins in 15 games, difficult but doable. Chievo, Parma, Cesena, Bari and Genoa, all have to come to the Olimpico, if we win those (Which we should, but this is Lazio we're talking about), and pick up the odd away win (Lecce, Brescia), we should get a CL place. I agree that the next four games are pivotal. Maximum points there and we will be in a great position.

The sticking point at the moment is that two competitors below us have games in hand over us. IF they win them all then the table would look like this now. 1. Milan 48, 2. Inter 44, 3. Napoli 43, 4. Rioma 42, 5. Lazio 41. High to mid 60's may well be enough again, personally I think Milan and Inter will without question secure two of the spots, which leaves two remaining which for me will be contested between ourselves, Napoli and Roma. I think Juve are out of the race, Udinese's great form will end eventually while Palermo have been up and down all season long. We're definately in with a shout but yes, the next four matches are certainly where points have to come from. I'd be surprised if we won all four, but ten points would be very decent.

Good banter going on with this topic so far i'm liking what I see. Champions League does remain a dream but an attainable one as mr. 365 has pointed out. If you think about it, if we repeat the exact same results as we did in the reverse fixtures we should comfortably sit in the top 4. That is if Juve don't find their groove, Napoli stay inconsistent, ditto for Palermo and Rioma, and the kicker would be if we win a fucking derby for once, b/c it's sad to say a derby win or loss dictates the next 2-4 results of the following games. Who knows how many extra points we could have grabbed had we beat them. (Surely Bologna would have been at least a point if not 3pts, same vs Cesena) The toss-up comes between us and Napoli: Yes Mazzarri is an amazing coach, whom i've admired since his magic at Reggina. But to say Napoli is head and shoulders above us is false. Cavani, Lavezzi and maybe to an extent Hamsik are elite players. We definitley lack in attack compared to most teams, but surely Napoli's defence is inferior to ours. (This also includes our keeper vs theirs) Soccer remains a team sport and it is here where we are best. Reja has def. gone over and above his usual managerial abilities this year and he's probably not the best coach to lead us into Europe but nonetheless I still think we are quite even with Napoli. They have a starting 11 without any true decent bench players minus maybe Zuniga and Yebda same with us. After our starting 11 we really only have Matuzalem and Rocchi when theya re not hurt. Napoli> in attack, Midfield is = , Lazio > in Defence

To be honest if we had a forward who could get anywhere near the output of Cavani then we'd have many more points now than we actually do. This to be honest is why I fancy Napoli to make it into the CL, whether we do or not. They had a bad defeat last night but they will probably roll most teams over on their home turf and it'l be difficult to keep pace even if I agree there's not much between us and them on balance.
Still, one things in our favour. Out of the top five we are the only one not in Europe and therefore have less games to worry about. This could work in our favour quite significantly

This is why for me in CL or bust. Why should I give a shit about the EL when most Italian teams don't. If we end up qualifying for EL all it will do is hold us back next year and we will have no chance at competing for the top 4.

For me personally, I like it when Lazio puts itself back on the football map. It could increase our capital and the worth of our players should rise if we have a good campaign. Europe still watches EL as is it is a battle for the bigger leagues who has the strongest mid-upper table teams. For me qualifying for Europe is key this season, though recently I haven't been convinced that we will score enough goals to beat out competition for champions league. In the first half of the season to remind us that we depended on the whole team chipping in goals and being accused of being lucky from reading articles and even from Di Canio (who's said it numerous times this season). I think Lazio have to start being more bold in attack and not getting 1-3 good chances a game, but instead per half. I hope Lazio can bring back the momentum when Mauri and Hernanes were playing great soccer and Ledesma to start distributing the ball better. We need this to happen again plus a final push from the team. Can it happen? We got to see.

Champions League or bust. I had a discussion last night with a Fresh off the boat Italian who went on with how we are already assured 2 spots from the 4 are taken. (In no particular order to Milan and Inter)
The last 2 he said are reserved for Rubentus and Rioma. According to his calculations the FIGC/Lega Serie A need the Giallozozzi in this competition based on their financial predicament. He said some eerie things that make a lot of sense;
1. Rome is the Capital of Italy and with all this negative pres about Uni-credit taking over followed by the rumors of foreign investment, should Rioma make the final 4 financially speaking they would be able to hold off these foreign take-overs being planned. In Italy it would be a great travesty if the almighty Totti's, the Capital of Italy were to be owned by stranieri.
With regards to la Vecchia troia,
Reube has nothing else to play for this year (out of Europa, out of Coppa Italia similar to us) moreover, years of favoritism as we've seen today with the Morganti ruling will keep their chances intact of making the final 4. This is based on a culture that's used to already winning and now have only 1 thing left to play for: Champions League soccer next season.
There was some minor stuff along the lines of UEFA not wanting teams that are synonymous with being in the competition already, but thats sciocchezza / nonsense.
Always interesting to hear other perspectives though.... Alas 67 points it is???

I agree, the EL is only useful if you take it seriously to get the squad used to playing three days a week in preperation for jumping to the next level, i.e. regular Champions League appearances and being able to balance that with a domestic league campaign, just like Sevilla in spain did when they won the EL and then went onto pretty decent things in the CL. Obviously Champions League would be better but we'd need Lotito to spend on the squad if we are able to compete in both Serie A and Europe, else we'd be overstretched and probably flop in both.

I just hope whether we make CL or EL .. lotito will invest beforehand and try to take things more seriously. As Baggio10 pointed out Napoli have a better 11 but we have more options on the bench. Even though we beat them, and they lost to Chievo they do look a lot more sharper than we do. If Lazio are to grow we need to start cracking CL.

"Sinceramente credo che la Champions sia fuori della nostra portata perché ci sono squadre più attrezzate." -Guglielmo Stendardo
I Sincerely believe the Champions League is far from our reach because there are other squads more equipped than ours!
A realist in the group I see. When you have bone-headed coaches, and cheap presidents it will always be far from our reach.
I was ready to post today 8 more wins, but it already looks like we can close this thread.
Sculli= Balls and nothing more!
