So here we are. What is known as the Derby della Capitale, the battle between two of the biggest and most famous names in the city of Rome, Italian football, and also the world. A derby that easily ranks into the top 3 in world football according to most neutral observers. Lazio vs Roma. A monumental clash which often compares to a gladiatorial battle, everything you can think of regarding a football game, and more, has happened over the decades in the derby. Both sides have been embarrassingly thrashed, last minute winners and equalisers, violence, provocations, accusations of match fixing, false reports of death... but some of those detract from what can also be at times just a classic sporting spectacle taking place in the beautiful pantheon of the Stadio Olimpico. The record, which includes all professional fixtures between the two sides, reads at 58 wins for Roma, 44 wins for Lazio, and 59 draws a piece. Roma also have scored more goals in them, 193, to Lazio's 160. Like all other derbies, form is thrown out the window; furthermore, like all other derbies, there is more then just the on the pitch battle to contend with. Who will have the greatest choreography? Which manager will become the one that lost or won the derby for their team? Roma won both derbies last season in what surely were the most disappointing Lazio derby performances in recent times. For the first, we had much possession but did not create many chances of note, and Roma's right back Cassetti of all people scored the winner. Then, for the second, after a great first half for Lazio, a missed penalty and Ranieri's controversial but inspired substitutions turned the derby on it's head meaning AS Roma had bragging rights for the season. The derby for me is clearly the highlight of the football calendar and, despite the fact we all have our own reasons for supporting Lazio, good bad or ugly, we are united as one for this clash. Potentially this season we could even meet more then twice, but each and every time will be special. Derby highlights for me include probably my favourite derby in my fantime, Lazio 3 - 2 Roma. We have had much more convincing wins but watching the game listening to a Riomma commentator and a last minute goal for us I do not think can be beaten. There is simply nothing better then a last minute goal against the merda and the camera zooming to De Rossi or totti with their hands on their hips, heads down. I was rolling about on the floor. The derby, such a meaningful and special game. But don't just take my word for it. I think the derby is a chance to put our values up against theirs. During the derby, what heppens inside of us is as important as what happens on the pitch. It's the moment at which the eyes of the football world are focused intently on Rome. It's a chance for us to hold our standard high and unfurl our colours on a world stage.
Derby moments are magical, mythical, they transcend football and become folklore. They grow in our minds and in our hearts; as time passes, they remain. We all remember where we were, what we felt, what we thought at those moments; the year of the four derbies, the tying goal by Castroman in the dying seconds, DiCanio's sublime strike and his run under the curva nord, the Ledesma goal, Behrami's "testa e cuore" winning strike... The derby is about these moments, they have nothing to do with tactics or stats, form guides or formations, the derby is a spiritual event.
- Imperatorlativm.Since I was in the previous one in Rome,I will help you with my experiences in there hoping that these will help you. First of all the whole Rome leaves for this derby.I went to Rome the previous day from the derby and I went with some italian friends in a fan club pub.Drinking, singing for Lazio the whole night. Some of them did not sleep ether and stayed at the pub all night long. The other dat,the derby match day everything was in the atmosphere of the derby.I went to Olimpico 6 hours before the match. And believe me there where many people in there trying to find a way to enter the stadium with no ticket. I was in there in order to help the brothers of Lazio putting in the banners and I entered too without a ticket due to these brothers that help me as I helped them with the banners etc.For me this match was the best of my life untill the next Lazio match....The Lazio flags all other Olimpico is a photo in my eyes that does never fade....So this match for me means a lot.Because I feel just LIKE BEING IN THERE tooeverytime in every match we play in there and not only..The hospitality and brotherhood with the guys in Italy is so strong so I feel like a part of them, like a part of the match too.Shouting, supporting LAZIO with all my power and voice...It was excellent...And something more...When the derby finished seeing merda totti with my own eyes doing the fucking gesture....this one made me a piece of LAZIO another time in addition....this was the best game in my life even if the result was bad... - Claudio Javier Lopez 7The Derby della Capitale exists out side the normal realm of Serie A, yet it still maintains the ability to change a season, for better or worse. at the very least it can brighten a dark season or stain a good one. my favorite Derby moment is the 3-1 Lazio Victory in the 2004-05 season. It had every thing you could want in a derby; Di Canio a true Laziale scored first, a real gem too. Merda tied it up. then César nonchalantly put Lazio back ahead. then Rocchi finished it off with a odd little bounce past the Merda Goalie. - DeBez87Wow, the Derby, so many memories of pain and ecstasy. This is one of those two special days of the year, when the blood is fully turning into baby blue, I feel lucky to be Laziale and to feel that "thing" before and sometimes after the game. I have that vivid memory in my head when Di Canio came home after so many years and scored in the derby della capitale to silence the whole curva merda. A 3-1 victory after what it felt like ages, when we last won against riom till then. - ArmLazialeMy most memorable derby moment would have to be the 3-0 beating Lazio gave Roma on December 12, 2006. This was the first ever derby I watched with my Nonno, whom I give credit to for turning me Laziale. We enjoyed a nice lunch, homemade Gnocchi made by Nonna then turned on the TV and realized they weren't showing the game at my Nonno's! We quickly jumped in the car, drove over to my Zio's and broke into his empty house because we knew his satellite had coverage of the game. We never missed a beat and we went insane as we watched Lazio dismantle Roma. After the game we called my Romanista cousins in Italia and gave them a tongue lashing; it was a day I'll never forget. - zazalazialeThere is only one REAL derby in Italy and it is this one. No losses can cause as much heartache and no victory can be celebrated so much as in this game. This is the most anticipated game of the year for me and keeps me up awake the night before. This game has no trophy but the happiness a victory brings is priceless. It's always a game that allows us to reflect on the past triumphs in past derbies and its a game that makes Lazio Hero's. I might not remember who scored against some of the teams last year but I can tell you who scored in derby matches 3 years ago. Finally, It's a chance to show our rivals the truth .. A ROMA C'E SOLO LA LAZIO! -LatiusWell the "derby" for me and i believe for all of us is the biggest game of the season. The derby against merda is totaly different match from all the others, is a MUST win no matter cause. All the wins against rioma where great but the one i remember the most and celebrated the most was the 3-2 win with begrami's goal in the last seconds of the match. I was screaming like a crazy 5 year old kid.
- AeLazioThe coming Derby has a significant meaning in that we lost both last season and miserably failed to create something to remember for ourselves and sources of inspiration for those yet to come. Thus, it is imperative that on Sunday we go beyond the limits of our physical skills for victory and give rise to glorious moments that will be spoken about in revered tones in the future.- 61514With Lazio unable to compete for any silverware in the past few years the derby has became equally important like winning a scudetto to me. The most important game of the season. In a week before the game the anticipation is unbearable. All your senses are pointed towards the derby. А game followed with so many emotions and such passion that for a second it makes you part of what Rome is waiting for an entire year. There are many derbies that comes to my mind but I'll point out few. My first derby ever during the season 1998/99, Lazio - Merda 3-3. Two wonderful goals by Mancini, one amazingly intelligent striker. 6 January 2005 a date that all Laziali have tattooed in their heart. Now I'm older, much more addicted to Lazio and know very well that the derby is more then a game. This is also a symbolic one since its the first derby for DiCanio since he returned and he scored an amazing goal. Not only that but he celebrated in front of curva di merda. Che goal!!! Goal di Ledesma!!! Lazio in vantaggio!!! Remember that? :) The most beautiful derby goal ever. But thats not the only thing that marks the derby in 2006. Generally weaker Lazio face scudetto ambitious Merda and won 3-0. Unbelievable. Yet another example that this is game by itself. - JofoThe derby has always been the most thrilling and terrifying game of the season for me. I have been to two derbies, both memorable for entirely different but equally entralling reasons. The first was in 1995/6 when Igor Protti scored a last minute equaliser before doing a funny crawling train celebration, I was in the Tevere with a mixed bunch of supporters and it was great to see Roma fans squirm after they thought they had it in the bag. The other derby was awesome because it was the 4/4 derby when we beat Roma for the 4th time in the 1997/8 season with goals from Boksic and Nedved. I love and fear the derby, but it is always a great match. - MassiFedericiThe derby is special as we all know. I can't pick one particular moment, but to me what mean the most are the emotions involved. I'm not at the edge of my seat when we meet Bari at San Nicola, but against I'm screaming in front of the television. A derby day is a magical day, but only one result is good enough. Three points and a big slap in their shitty faces! - RoslagenThe Derby is special for me because in these past years we've had some shitty seasons, not being competitive for European places fx, so winning the derby is a real moral booster. It doesn't make my season you know, like "Just win the derby and you can lose everything else" like some seem to feel, but winning against them is a great feeling. My twin brother is also a Roma fan and losing to that cocksucker is hell. I often watch the derbies with my brother and the best ones were in Jan 2005, and 2008 when Behrami scored. 2005 derby was when I really started supporting Lazio and is the first game I remember seeing with them, (Prior to that I couldn't really watch Serie A so Lazio was my team, but I couldn't follow them properly). Then in 2008, just scoring in the last minute in such a game, in football nothing is sweeter. - LaziogimpHere it is, the moment we’ve all waited for. Months down, days to go to the biggest fight as players and fans of our professional lives. Current form is thrown out the window in the hopes of bringing one side of the city to jubilation while the other crumbles in depression for months. Days before, the atmosphere is electric. Hours before kick-off Rome takes on an old western like setting…You can literally here the wind! November 7th will pass with the rightful owners of the First Team of Rome standing tall. The players know it, we know it. We are better and we fight for 1st but above all we fight to restore our lost pride. Daje Ragazzi per tutti tifosi! Forza La Prima Squadra Della Capitale. Fondest derby memory: Being outplayed for most of the 1st half on Dec. 10 2006. When out of no where a bullet came passing by that turned the game on its head. - Baggio10The derby is of course a very important game for us laziali, the players and the standings. But all in all it's "just" a serie a game where we could get a maximum of 3 points, not more. I often hear that a derby win is as precious as the scudetto or a fix CL spot. In my opinion thats bullshit. Most important is that we are succesful in the whole season. I really love derby wins, but if we lose this derby I won't throw the season in the trash. Lazio success >>> Merda failure! - AustrianLazialeIt's the game of games, the one that simply cannot end in defeat. It can give me the highest of highs, or the lowest of lows. In recent years my favourite game was the 4-2 win in April 09. Two quick goals at the start, the win was never in doubt. Casting my mind back further, the 2-1 win March 2000 that set us of on an incredible run towards the Scudetto. Magnificent. - Lazio365Lazio is my favorite team long and Roma would`ve be my most hated club even if they weren`t from Rome mostly because of Tottimerda and they`re dirty still of play especially in the games they are about to lose. The fact that both club`s are from the same city makes me hate them even more. I have much more reasons why I love Lazio(openly supporting Arkan in 2001,humanitary help after my borncity earthquake...and so on...) and hate Roma but it`s enough said.``LETS FUCK `EM`` - GoceThe derby for me is very important for many reasons,1st of all merda is our city rival, and every laziale all over the world waits for that game! I am laziale since 1999 and i never miss a derby..Frankly LAZIO is my only team i support and what can me happy more that a win against merda! Finally after many years i will have the oportunity to watch the derby from the stands of Olympico of Rome..its a dream come true! for me to win in this occasion will be the most exciting moment of my life! - Alex(cy)We are the best team in Rome and Italy at the moment but that doesn't mean anything. There are no favourites for the derby. Can we handle the expecation, as we know Riomma thrive on being the "underdog." FORZA LAZIO!

I have to say .. definitely the best pre-game start to a thread ever. Good Job Theo!!!!
I just finished watching two moments that usually bring up my spirits and that is ledesma's long distance goal and behramis final goal. I can't wait to watch this game.
With Totti being out .. it can be seen as good and bad. He is a great player and can change a game so i'm glad he's not playing in that respect. But I also want him no the field if we beat them to see his look of disappointment.
Winning this game would be Ecstasy since we would snatch another 3 points against the merde and extend our lead with them in the standings.
With Biava missing and most likely stendardo stepping in i don't see a different formation than what we've been seeing almost every week so far.

Agree, Great thread idea Theo Great way to start off a week of anticipation, nerves, and the odd dash of insecurity. what more could you ask for from a Derby... well I guess not starting at 9:00am CET, drinking before 12 always makes me feel a little weird; to add to it, my Papa wont be able to make it here that early in the morning. I could watch it later DVR'ed but it just wouldn't feel right. minor inconveniences aside, this should be a great event, built up by a week of speculations and intrigue. will it be a tempered confidence from Lazio or will we be cocky/arrogant and underestimate ASmerda? What formation will Reja deem appropriate? who will take Biava's place? can Zarate keep his mouth shut till he scores a Goal? (Ill go out on a limb and say he has already started talking trash) Forza Lazio!!!!

Kind of a digression, interesting how even Ledesma seems to be getting the spotlight too now. According to football italia that some say he is the reason why Lazio is performing better despite our big signing of hernanes. I was never a big Ledesma fan and maybe I don't give him the credit he deserves. But the team definately did better when was reintegrated into the team. I've been one to rip this guy stead for the last couple years as being a total houdini on the field. I also hated mauri and he's proven to be an integral part of this team now. I have to agree, he does contributes a lot to our defense. I agree with Reja that Biava is a step up from Cribari .. but really that doesn't say much. I hope he can give us one of his famous derby goals as he's done twice before in the past .. but non can match his famous canon: did anyone else get goosebumps ??

Wonderful Idea of a thread opener, bringing together different memories and opinions. Superb stuff. This is a game like no other, totally unpredictable and the fact that they stink at the moment, despite the few wins they've cobbled together makes me uneasy to be honest. Ledesma does add something from a defensive viewpoint, and weighed in with a great assist yesturday. Inch perfect. To justify all the high praise however I would like to see more than that.

Direct from Tutto Mercato Web: They have blocked the flight of Olympia in the skies of Rome and the Tiber forum(section) will almost certainly be half empty. All this is to blame for hundreds of thugs who ruin the derby in advance of the world more beautiful. Grounds of public policy, the "advice" of the police to prevent the flight of the course will be welcomed by Lotito that, for any reason in the world, intends to transform the performance of Olympia for the fans to something else. The appeals by some pseudo fan (raised by some local radio stations where fomenting violence is the first rule), to bring to the stage whistles, lasers, bird calls and other things to disrupt the flight of Olympia have hit the mark and, avoid worse problems, Lazio can not show everyone connected worldwide telecast of the show biancoceleste symbol (there are direct connections and from all over the globe). Lazio fans are disappointed but, at least not to lose fluid that this initiative is yielding positive start to the season, we can not exclude the presence of even Olympia stadium in the Curva Nord Lazio. In short, we study a surprise to get the same effect without jeopardizing the health of the eagle. Will continue to train in Formello subsequently performed every two to three days, the usual test Olimpico. It is fatter now than a kilo in the face of all those animals that have stirred up a despicable din quest'aquila instead of worrying about problems more serious than other animals. Too bad, because the business card that will give the city will not be beautiful with a half empty stadium, the Forum Tiber divided by a cordon of stewards to prevent contacts between the rival fans. Again, as has often happened in the derby in the capital, the idiocy of a few has prevailed over the desire of many people to enjoy the mother of all the games in peace. TAGLIANDI - La febbre derby sale per ora solo in casa Lazio: oltre ai 12 mila abbonati, venduti 13.200 biglietti (Curva esaurita, Distinti Nord 20 euro, Monte Mario 110); per la Roma solo mille (Curva Sud). I'm not taking anything for granted for this game. So far Roma have been terrible and we are sitting comfortably at the top but none of that matters in the derby, we, Lazio, know that best. Past derbies we have been the underdog but now they are. So far so good in terms of conditions for the game, they have a really important away CL match vs Basel on Wednesday, so maybe we'll catch them a bit tired, hopefully both mentally and physically. Pizarro, Brighi and Totti out, decent players but hopefully Vucinic will have a "weird accident" or something. I fear him the most for this game. As for us, I agree letting Radu take Biava's place in the center, and fuck it just put Diakite at left back. That guy can play anywhere.
