"A relegation dog-fight" was the heading going into February 7th, 2010.  A day that would change Lazio for the better.

Same exact fixture here; SS. Lazio vs Catania Calcio.  The 1-0 victory on the back of Maxi Lopez was the icing on the cake for a miserable season and an end to the Ballardini nightmare.

Today we look forward to this fixture again with a completely different Lazio side, capable of achieving big things in the Serie A. http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2010/11/23/2227444/lazio-can-achieve-a-champions-league-place-mauro-zarate

While Catania sit slightly better than usual on the standings podium it should be noted though that there is a 3 way tie for points from 10th-12th spot as well as 6 points separating 10th from 19th spot.  Like us, Catania rebounded a derby loss with a victory at home to last placed Bari, but will come into this game in search of at least a point to even out their form.  Coach Marco Giampaolo after the victory against Bari: “We had to get the victory against a side that closed down every space. We are missing an away win to really take the step up.”

Lazio coughed up some points Sunday but still remain sole owners of the second spot.  Their Coppa Italia match shouldn't be an issue in terms of fitness as Reja has opted for a completely fresh eleven for the match vs Albinoleffe.  Aside from the usual niggling injuries, Mister Edy should have a complete team to choose from.  They say you don't win the league/scudetto by winning a handful of "big" matches against the traditionally "big clubs" (Milan,Inter,Juve etc.) but by defeating the opponents that are your level or inferior.  With all due respect to Catania, February 7th,2010 should almost be considered a decade ago with a completely different approach to our season this time around.  New mentality and a renewed almost arrogance or chip on our shoulders, Lazio must take full advantage of the visitors poor away form and put them to the sword early.
3 points is a must especially with the likes of the big around the corner (Inter Dec. 3 then Juve. Dec. 10).

We enjoyed a nice run in first place for a while and then fell to second place and now we are in risk of losing our spot if we don't this weekend. Napoli is waiting for us to choke. After this game we will have a serious gauntlet with Juve and Inter coming up and its highly unlikely we'll pull through with maximum points. We slipped last week against parma .. now it's time to put Catania to sleep. I hope we can strike and strike early. Last week was almost a panic attack when parma scored first that would have set a really bad tone for us.

Lazio           GF - 16 GA - 10
Catanana     GF - 11 GA - 11

We must win! FORZA LAZIO!

Indeed, with two very tough games after this one that means one thing, three points only here. Catania are a good side, mainly at home however and their record shows that. Their winless on the road, and no excuses will be good enough if that statistic changes after this game. Non mollare mai.

Goal.com against Parma gave Mauri the flop of the match.  I found this funny b/c it def wasn't one of his poorest showings but I guess people all of a sudden expect performances from the guy.  His no-show in the derby was much more of a flop than last week.

The point is, someone on another forum made an interesting point on the formation.  When Mauri plays deeper in the mid to allow Zarate space up front to start alongside Floccari, Mauri usually suiffers.  Which is interseting b/c up until now Zarate has been the one suffering having to play wider and track back.  I think i'd rather have an underperforming Zarate than Mauri b/c at least when Mauri is on his game he scores goals and sets up pretty plays.

Interested to see what formation Mister Edy has in store.

I think its hard to single any one player out against parma. the whole team underperformed. Mauri gets goal.com's pick.... I guess bc he has been the best so far, and certainly didnt show up.

I wounder if the plan is to rest ledesma this weekend, to have him fresh for inter. It seems that he will be playing in the coppa(must win) and I couldnt see Reja playing him three times in two weeks. Matuzalem seemed to fill his place well enough. with Brocch at his side I have no defensive worries

Our chances are a lot better in this match considering Catania is without Maxi Lopez this weekend.

Catania are more dangerous than Parma so I would like to approach this match with a little more caution. Keep it tight at the back and one goal should be enough for three points. We need those points for the next couple of rounds.

As for the formation, as I said earlier, I did not have a chance to watch the game against Parma live but I noticed Reja used Zarate as the lone striker up front and Mauri-Floccari-Hernanes midfield. I cannot say how well it worked but I would like to see that again.

Catania are more dangerous than Parma

Indeed based on this season as a whole. We did however play a Parma team in reasonable form, so last week's point was not as bad as perhaps it may have looked based on league positions alone. Nonetheless, Catania especially at home have a record to be proud of this season. Thankfully, we are at home for this one and the absence of their talisman Maxi Lopez is indeed a benefit for us. Again, I agree with what you said about these three points being needed what with Inter and Juve up next. We have to get a win here, then see how good we really are against two of the best sides in the division.

The game is live on bet365 by the way.

Yeah, I understood Parma played well and the Crespo goal was a blinder for a team that have struggled to get the ball in the net this season. The thing is, there is not really much difference between Parma and Catania in the standings/statistics but to me it looks like Parma seems to be struggling a bit to find their level whereas Catania seems to have morphed into a solid mid-table team. The good thing is they do not travel well and I hope they will not yet find a secret recipe for that. It would be a shame indeed if they got their first away win at Olimpico.

as some have noted, its important that we get our three points here with these tough games ahead.  I think a nice and tidy 2-0 W is in order, no bullshit.  The game is also be being shown on the Score, I believe, for those in Canada.

Agree 2-0 W, would be just fine. Lazio-Catania will be playing on FSC (Fox Soccer Chanel) too I dont know if it is a result of Lazio's much improved season or what, but it seems like they are showing more games this season

I don't want to predict the result but I want a clean sheet none the less. Catania have lost their best scorer and most dangerous man in the attack. The one that scored the goal last season against us, just after we were included in the "battle" to sign him. The rest its up to our attack and the 3 points are easily ours. I believe that we have learnt the Cessena lesson well and will not make the same mistake again.

Except Lopez being baned there is another good news that has been circling around Rome. CN has come out of the dark and reported that they will return against Catania (if not then definitely vs Inter next week). Sodolazio guys have said the same thing. So we can expect some quality cheering this Sunday and hell of a atmosphere on Olimpico.

Well she was Laziale only when we won the scudetto. Since then she has been very silent. Now when the things are going smoothly she is bitching again.

*I didn't know that she was part Finish, thx for that info.

I am not that fond of her either but, mah, I thought you had knowledge of her having liaisons with Merda officials, Livorno tifosi or something. Though she did participate in some project together with Capitano di Merda not too long ago.
