"I am the reflection of the supporters" - Di Canio

On the surface it seems like a no brainer.  Lazio surely must be better than last season.  But really think about it:

We are top of the table as we were last year but do we have the character to go to stay there this time? Numerous derby losses and that failure against Udinese proved that we didn't even deserve a 4th spot and a CL beth last year.

When my irish colleage first posed the question I said yes, simply on a depth factor:

We've had so many injuries in the midfield already but we've managed to keep it organized because of our depth.  No longer shall Bresciano be our go to guy to come off the bench.  Never again shall I see a name like Vignaroli leading our wings.

HOWEVER:
Our points tally indicate a very similar story to last seasons team.  For us to be better we should have been had more points than last year at this point in the league.   we should have taken more points away and at least the same amount at home. We should have had scored more and at the same time conceded less. How does it look?

After ten rounds in Serie A 2010/2011 vs 2011/2012:

22p (10 at home in 2010) vs 21p (8 at home 2011) despite playing one more home game so far this season compared to the last season at this point.

13-6 in goals vs 16-8

Last year we complained about lack of goals but our defence was a lot tighter and got us the results.  This year we’ve barely been able to win convincingly at home while our defence seems to be a step behind last year.  Obviously Klose is miles above whatever Floccari will ever be, yet Cisse seems to be of the same mould of Mauro Zarate.  The difference in my opinion is his experience and maturity.  The ability to realize that the team is doing well and to not think only for himself.  The sooner we stop paying attention to his lack of goals (i.e the media, fans, comments, coddling him) the quicker he will return to the Lion he is.  AT LEAST I HOPE SO…

What do you guys think?  Are we really that much better?  We proved that we still lack resources in terms of playing twice a week.  Our Europa form proves it.  However we did finally win a derby which is a huge bonus to morale going forward.

Please educated responses and not a bunch of flags  and beers.    ha ha

It's a really good question and I'd say we are slightly better than last year. The points and goal difference are very similar and I think we will finish in a similar position to last year. We were also fairly heavily reliant on one player this time last year - Mauri - and this year is the same, Klose ofc. Hopefully Klose can keep up his efforts all season, it certainly looks like he can have the professionalism to do so.
The reason I say we are slightly better is the midfield depth -Lulic is looking a player - and I think Cisse is better than Zarate, he already has the assists and if he can start finishing he will be a huge asset for us. Konko and Marchetti have slotted in for Licht and Muslera well and Marchetti can prove to be a step above Muslera. I think we can get to the quarters of the Europa if Reja learns how to get consistent performances in that, and finish 4th, which would be another great season. Unfortunately a Champions league place may be out of reach if Milan, Juve, Napoli and Udinese perform, and if we do suffer from playing in Europe, but it's definetly not unthinkable because the players are playing as a team which is so important.

We are better than last year.   Last season we depended on Hernanes / Mauri tremendously in the middle.  Mauri has been injury plagued and Hernanes has been in/out of form all year.  The fact that we are getting the same results, even without these guys playing their best is a huge sign.  Wait until they both return to full form.  We also now have so many more players that we can legitimately rely on, instead of Bresciano and co. from last year filling in.  The only thing that seems a little bit weaker is in the defending third.  We seem more disorganized and less sharp, the loss of Lichsteiner obviously contributes.

All in all, we aren't miles ahead of last year, but we definitely are better overall.

First of all Thumbs up to the posts already above.

If you want to stop and backtrack our past few games, we've let in 3 goals in the past 7 games. That is an extraordinary thing to do. Also notice that Dias and Biava were either injured or suspended. When you look to see who replaced them, you can see Diakite has been doing a fantastic job as an optional 3rd CB as we now know Stank is just not champions league qualification material. Diakite's growth is another quality we can rely on.

Also I want to point out the 'loss' of lichsteiner. He was solid defensively which I cannot take away from him but he was an absolute airhead when it came to attacking. He needed to cross the ball stupidly every damn time and could not of cut back and played it in the middle, even if there were 2 guys on that tight right side he plays. Konko has been a force going forward, threatening every game and has been adequate in defending this year so far.

Next, Muslera... Marchetti, again I want to bring up that our slow start with our goals against could have been due to the first time the team has played together in Serie A. Perhaps they are geling and understanding each others true strengths and weaknesses on the field. Marchetti is growing in confidence and thats all he really needed, though another blunder can put that in jeoprady. Regardless, he is progressing to the goalie management thought he would be and is finally making game breaking saves.

Mauro Zarate #10. What a phenom he was  who is now a sour..bitter.. player. Getting rid of Zarate has taken a load off the team and stress on Reja. He is not in the back of his head anymore and can control his players in peace. Diji Cisse although is being just as pissy as Zarate, has contributed to the success of Lazio so far which Zarate was not doing... even when the team was hot. I know we are all hoping Cisse will come around and that is still in question. I hope so, we have to see.

Miroslav Klose is in 2011 and wasn't in 2010. Enough said.

This team> last year  and we have to reinforce the RB and LB in January so we can have Lulic up on mid creating and Zauri Stank not coming on and we can go quite a long way.

We are balancing two competitions this year, add to that teams visibly sit back when they come to the Olimpico to try and limit our space speaks volumes. We've missed Mauri as well who was a catalyst at times last season. Having him back would help. We also have, at times, five new starters to this line up. Klose, Cisse, Marchetti, Konko and Lulic. Almost half a team. The fact that we've balanced that transition shows our growth.

We're stronger surely. Konko and Marchetti have filled the shoes of Muslera and Lichsteiner well, then of course we have Klose. Where would we be without him? Not at the top that's for sure. He has scored winners vs Fiorentina, Cesena and Roma, and then of course the goal vs Parma was mostly thanks to him. Benching wise we are also stronger. Having Sculli, Matuzalem and Rocchi sure as hell beats having Bresciano or Manfredini on the bench.

I don't think there's any question that we are stronger - by how much, only time will tell. More than anything, I feel we're more mature this year. We seem to handle tough situations better. Diakite is improving by leaps and bounds, Lulic has procven to be a gem and, I'll say this once again, Marchetti > Muslera. I'm close to saying the same for Konko and Lichtsteiner. Add to that, as others have, the fact that Mauri, Biava and Dias have missed significantly.

With a full team playing we are alot better than last year!

In regards to this comment above i think its fair to say that the first few games we were not playing to our potential yet.. Marchetti was plating so bad and scaring the shit out of me when he first started and Hernanez took a bit to start performing well too.

As mentione in the last 7 games we have made a real jump in quality even with our long list of injuries.. Mauri us the last peice of the puzzle and its a shame hes out for so long!

And mark my words.. CIsse will be back and he will be great i'm praying that he destroys Napoli and especially Juventus!!!!

we are much better than last season,we look stronger all over the pitch compared to last season,we have had injurys this season and so far coped very well, and klose has made us play more attacking football, its only a matter of time when we batter someone 5-0,team spirit is also much better, and the feeling is we can do something special this season, also edy has made some good decisions,so all in all its been a great season so far.

Last year this time we already max'ed out our potential, with some Kozak scoring luck.

This year this time we still have room to improve.
