Thomas "der Hammer" Hitzlsperger has joined SS Lazio!

Hitzlsperger (27) is a Munich born LM/CM whose senior career began in the ranks of Aston Villa in 2001 from where he transferred to Vfb Stuttgart in 2005, becoming a captain of the team in the summer of 2008, until being discharged of duty late last year. I suppose it is not a coincidence that he was put on the market soon afterwards. Hitzlsperger has also been a German national team player since 2004 with 120 caps and 20 goals.

Hitzlsperger's merits should be sufficient to convince anyone that Lotito finally made a purchase worth celebrating for at such a late stage of the mercato. Although the signing was announced on Friday already I really hope I am not jumping the gun by creating this thread as happened with Eguren.

We desperately need a guy nicknamed the hammer! Benvenuto a Roma "er martello"!

Time for me to reveal a secret... I am a closet GERMAN

Although I guess it's kind of obvious owing to my surname. I was born and raised in England but I do have weak Polish roots but also stronger German roots somewhere in the world. So if I was a footballer I'd be eligible to play for 3 countries.

Anyway, this signing is great - It's cool to have some German grit in the midfield, someone who packs a punch - hopefully it means Kolarov can get back on the wide positions where he belongs, and none of this reincarnation bullshit. But aside from his nationality is a cracking player who I've always enjoyed because he is a great passer, set piece taker (less wasteful then Kolarov) and doesn't waste his shots most of the time.

Daje Der Hammer. He's in my avatar when he is unveiled.

It is official, you can believe it. Stuttgart have declared the transfer on their website and Hitzlsperger has already given his first statement to press as a Lazio player. He seems a bit sad about leaving Stuttgart but looks forward to this new challenge, hopes to continue the tradition of Germans "doing well" in Serie A, believes in the rise of Lazio before the season's end, and all that. Bit of an anti-climax, eh? Nonetheless, I cannot wait for THE HAMMER to fall next Sunday.

EXCELLENT

Arrivederci Thomas Hitzlsperger
Shortly before the transfer window closes on Monday, Thomas Hitzlsperger has decided on a move to Italy's 'Serie A' and Lazio Rome. Hitzlsperger's contract with VfB, which had been valid until June 2010, was dissolved on Sunday.

'Hitz the Hammer'

The German international considers the move to be a chance to make a fresh start following a difficult period in his career. The Munich born midfielder signed to VfB in summer 2005 from Aston Villa, where he made 99 appearances in the English Premier League. In England, Hitzlsperger's powerful shot earned him the nickname 'Hitz the Hammer'. At VfB the midfield engine quickly earned himself a first team place and in 2006 he was part of Germany's World Cup squad. The following season he was a championship winner with Stuttgart and was involved in the DFB-Cup final.

VfB captain 2007 - 2009

In 2007, Hitzlsperger took over the captaincy at VfB from Fernando Meira and in his time at the club he has scored 20 goals in 125 Bundesliga games, seven goals in 17 DFB Cup matches and made a total of 26 European appearances, including in the UEFA Champions League, scoring twice. Hitzlsperger has also won 51 international caps with Germany and scored six times for his country.

A difficult decision

"It wasn't easy for us to allow Thomas to go, as he is a player who very much identifies with the club, but we do respect his decision. We wish Thomas lots of success at his new club and thank him kindly for his performance here at VfB Stuttgart," commented Executive Representative for Sport Horst Heldt.

"Not easy to say goodbye"

Thomas Hitzlsperger himself commented on his move to Rome: "It's not easy for me to say goodbye to VfB Stuttgart. I had a wonderful time here and I will always carry the positive memories of the club, the fans and the city with me. I will always enjoy coming back to Stuttgart and I have found many friends here. The end hasn't exactly been satisfactory for me and not at all nice, but that's football! I'm looking forward to this new challenge now. It's a privilege to play in a top league abroad and I hope to continue the good tradition of German players having success in Italy. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for VfB Stuttgart and I am absolutely convinced that the club will finish the season well."

It's a privilege to play in a top league abroad

To be honest that is the only way we can truly attract players imo, owing to Lotito, our league positon et al. Serie A is one of world's top 3 leagues officially, and is of higher quality then Bundesliga and Ligue 1, hence why we are able to attract the likes of Hitzlsberger to leave a club close to his heart, and also, perhaps, hopefully, Ederson.

Apparantly he has cost us £800,000 (€920,000) Even though we could have got him on the bosman for free at the end of the season... on one hand, dumbass Lotito

But then again, we need him NOW. So it definitely makes sense.

It is very good news and for peanuts as well.

But, as we know, we can't stop here.
