Lotito sees Zarate's Lazio
Sunday 6 July, 2008
Lazio have signed Mauro Zarate and President Claudio Lotito maintains he’ll be the cornerstone of their new campaign.

“Zarate arrived this weekend and he is the most important signing of the season,” said the patron.

“There is a lot of enthusiasm around him and we hope it will go well.”

The former Birmingham City striker has a £20m price-tag, but was bought on an instalment plan starting with a loan worth £2.4m.

Lazio could sign up half his contract by May 30, 2009 for £4.4m, then complete the signature for £6.7m in 2010 for a total of £13m over three years.

The Biancocelesti also brought in 19-year-old Czech talent Libor Kozak from SFC Opava.

“He is an Aleksander Kolarov style buy, in that he has all the characteristics needed to mature and grow into a champion.

“We’ll just have to wait and see when and how that develops.”

Lotito turns his focus to other transfer stories, above all that Luciano Zauri will move to Fiorentina in exchange for Dario Dainelli.

“Now we are going to be concentrating on thinning down the squad. Zauri is one of those considered ‘for sale,’ but I don’t know if Fiorentina are interested. We haven’t negotiated with them.

“As for Dainelli, we are only focused on selling players right now.”

Apparently Middelsborough and Portsmouth were trying to the last minute to reopen negotiations for Zarate and there may have been some less that scrupulous double dealing by the Saudi team. It seems however, that the deal was officialized and, at least for the next year, Zarate will play for Lazio. Doe every deal we make have to be so bloody complicated and dramatic?

This is One of the greatest new signings that Lazio has got long time ago. It looks like Lotito finally open his wallet. I predict battle from 4 to 6 position and anything less will be disaster. Let us see how this new guys will fit together. Probably if we get rid of baronio, tare, mutarelli and other players the club can collect some more money for transfers or just to save some knowing that baronio has biggest wage in hole Lazio (750000e.)

My happiness is that the deal gives us great option and financial freedom, i hope we seal the deal and make him permanent.
We should source for more money, i will hate it if lazio becomes a feeder team for other clubs that may want to snap these guys.
Rocchi actually will earn over a million with his new deal.

I read several articles on how portsmouth was after zarate but I really didn't believe he would make a switch after he met the fans and landed in rome last week. I'm so happy he's keen on playing for Lazio despite the possibility of other teams offering higher wages.

Zarate only wants Lazio move

Lazio remain in pole position to sign Mauro Zarate, despite reported late interest from Middlesbrough and Portsmouth.

Pompey have always denied any interest in the talented Argentinian, who spent the end of last season on loan at Birmingham City, but Al Sadd claim to have more lucrative offers on the table despite a deal being set up with Lazio.

The South American striker wants to be unveiled as a new player at Stadio Olimpico this week and it seems his representatives are hopeful there will be no late hitches.

"Mauro is still here," said Sergio Zarate, his brother and agent in Il Tempo. "He wants [to join] Lazio and remains at Lazio.

"On this, there is no doubt.

"We're only missing the final details that still need to be determined with Al Sadd but this is only a detail."

There is the suspicion that Al Sadd will ask for a higher fee due to the rival offers on the table but Zarate's mind seems set on joining Lazio.

Tommorow is the official presentation of Mauro Zarate to Lazio despite some last minute offers from portsmouth that went around.
